“In recent years, there has been an exponential increase in seismic activity in the Autonomous Region of Madeira”, said Ricardo Lume.
The deputy recalled that the last earthquake with the greatest magnitude in the archipelago was registered on 7 March, reaching 5.3 on the Richter scale, 40 kilometres from Deserta Grande, originating at 4.7 kilometres in depth and “was felt throughout the island of Madeira”.
Ricardo Lume stated that “the majority of the population and a large part of the infrastructure are not prepared for a stronger seismic impact”.
The PCP party recommends that the Regional Government draw up an action plan on seismic risks in Madeira, characterise the most vulnerable population and buildings and prepare specific interventions for the adaptation or rehabilitation of public buildings and equipment with strategic importance for civil protection in situations of more impactful earthquakes.
They're gonna stop the earthquakes? Are there elections anytime soon?

Seismic activity @ that low dept (less then 10 km depth) means probably seismic activity due mining activity like gas or oil. regular natural quakes are at much higher depth. So if mining is done, the way to tackle it, is to quit mining.

Arno is wrong, natural quakes happen all day long at shallow depths, nothing to do with mining... Don't judge what you don't understand.
