“Sumol+Compal estimates to invest three million euros in a
photovoltaic plant to make its production and distribution unit in Almeirim
more sustainable from an energy point of view, with the production of renewable
energy for self-consumption,” the group announced in a statement.
The project will be carried out in several phases, the first
of which has already been completed with the installation of 1,850 photovoltaic
panels, in an area of 11,000 square meters (m2) and an installed capacity of
1 MWp.
The first phase corresponds to 15% of the energy needs of
that factory, a percentage that should increase to 25% with the start of energy
production in the second phase, which is expected to be concluded at the beginning
of next year.
In total, the project should reach an installed capacity of
three MWp, avoiding the emission of around 984 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).
The group also said that this plant opens the opportunity,
together with the Almeirim City Council, to evaluate ways to make surplus
energy available to the community.
Sumol+Compal has four production units in Portugal and one
in Mozambique and exports to more than 70 countries.
