Speaking to Lusa, Osvaldo Gonçalves (mayor of Alcoutim) said that the situation in that area of the Algarve foresees great difficulties for the rest of the year, since water reserves which should only be consumed during the dry season, in summer, are already being used.
“We are advancing with the consumption of these reserves and, perhaps, jeopardizing some of these reserves for the future, which will deplete, both in terms of aquifers and in terms of animal feed, permanent meadows and spontaneous vegetation, which at the moment it is dry”, warned the mayor.
Osvaldo Gonçalves observed that, in Alcoutim, there is not a great deal of pressure in terms of irrigated agriculture or intensive herds, especially cattle, which consume the most water, and noted that, even in sheep and goats, the pressure is not very relevant.
Livestock producers and farmers who still exist in the municipality are already facing difficulties caused by the lack of rain and the drought, which is considered severe in some areas of the east Algarve, warned the mayor.
I am a naturalist and I look to see how nature is doing in the countryside where I live. This year we are experiencing serious drought problems due to climate change, and it is worse than previous years, as far as I can see. The April showers we needed did not arrive and the land, which was already too dry has been getting worse as the sunshine and heat have continued. Wildflowers that should be at their best are struggling to produce flowers at all and in many cases have given up and are shrivelling in the high temperatures that are coupled with a lack of rainfall. Temporary vernal pools, which amphibians need for breeding purposes in spring, in many cases failed to form or quickly dried up.

We a know there's a lack of water but developers keep building until every little plot of land is built upon. At the same time the number of golf resorts keeps growing and more and more people are visiting. It's time to curb construction until we more permanent solution has been found.

How can it be possible to keep making the huge investment in the the development of Avocado farms, when surely it's obvious there is a long term shortage of water.
