Yesterday marked one year since free public transport came into force in Lisbon, a measure implemented by the City Council.
The free urban public transport passes of Carris, Metropolitano and CP already have 90,554 members and are intended for Lisbon residents over 65 years old and students up to the age of 23.
"Today we have more than 90,000 people in Lisbon who do not pay for public transport, which is equivalent to about 16% of our population," says the mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, welcoming the reach of what he considers to be "one of the most important measures of our mandate".
"Lisbon is one of the few cities in Europe that has free public transport. With this measure, which will not be taken back, we want to give a very clear signal that we are in the direction of decarbonization and a cleaner city, "adds the mayor.
The same morning, Carlos Moedas was at Carris' facilities in Alcântara, where, symbolically, he handed a free pass to Dulce Marques, a 91-year-old Lisbon citizen.
Well I pay for it. And then have to wait 10 minutes for a train every time I swap lines, doubling my travel time.

Is this also applicable for tourists over 70 or only Portugal nationals?
