Passing through a Via Verde toll without paying can happen for various reasons but how do you deal with the situation?
What to do if you pass without paying?
The Toll Payment portal, launched by Via Verde in 2015, is the answer for those who, for some reason, did not pay on time. Here are the simple steps you can follow according to Postal:
- Access the Toll Payment portal.
- Select the appropriate option: whether for drivers who passed a toll without paying or for those who received a notification with a registration code.
- Fill in the necessary fields: registration number, date of travel, full name, Tax Number (TIN), Postal Code, location and full address.
- Submit the data and obtain an ATM reference to make the payment.
- Payment prevents the debt from being forwarded to the Tax Authority (AT), providing a quick and effective solution.
Consequences of passing without paying?
If the process reaches the AT, opening a tax enforcement process, the offender is obliged to pay the toll fee and the administrative cost of opening the process. Additionally, an administrative offense process is initiated, resulting in a fine with a minimum value corresponding to 7.5 times the toll price (never less than 25 euros).
Failure to pay tolls is considered a legal infraction, resulting in additional administrative costs charged at the time of payment. However, voluntary resolution avoids further complications and increased costs. A preventative approach is always advisable.
According to the Toll Payment portal, wait 15 days to check the amounts owed, except for specific locations, such as the A23 (Torres Novas/Guarda Sul) and A4 (Vila Real/Quintanilha), where payment can be made 48 hours after passing.
This portal covers several concessionaires, including Brisa, BrisaL, Autoestradas do Litoral, Autoestradas do Atlântico, Autoestradas do Baixo Tejo, Autoestradas do Litoral Oeste, Autoestradas do Douro Litoral, and Infraestruturas de Portugal (A21 – Malveira/Ericeira concession), among others. However, it does not include Ascendi, Via Livre and Portvias, for which you must contact the concessionaires directly.
