Caledonian Pinewoods are globally unique and support rare wildlife including red squirrels, capercaillies and crossbills.
Yet less than 2 percent of the Caledonian forest which once covered the Highlands, survives. The Wild Pine project aims to identify and save these forgotten pinewoods.
We need to preserve pinewoods in Portugal too. Here they are in trouble with droughts, wildfires, insect attacks and the Pine Wilt Nematode, the last of which can kill whole and previously healthy trees. All these problems have been made much worse due to Climate Change.
