"I think it is an issue that, at this moment, is not the priority issue. The priority issue is valuing human resources. Entering into this discussion is a diversion and fails to look and give focus and attention to the most important issues", declared Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in response to the media, who asked him whether or not he was in favour of reintroducing mandatory service.

When asked whether, in his opinion, the Portuguese military is motivated, he replied: "I think they are motivated, but, as you know, my position is the same: they can be more motivated."

"I mean, I think there is a commitment on the part of the Government to carry out a dialogue with the military leaders to motivate human resources in our Armed Forces more in terms of status", added Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
