Currently, UAlg offers 558 beds and, with the construction of the two new residences, “it will increase its supply capacity by 51%”, now having 845 beds, according to a statement sent to Lusa news agency.
The construction of the new residences, with financing from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), totals 287 new beds, 162 on the Gambelas campus and 125 on the Penha campus, both in the municipality of Faro.
The university residence in Gambelas, in the parish of Montenegro, awarded for around 8.9 million euros, has a construction area of 1781 m2, distributed over three floors.
The 162 beds planned for this residence are divided into 80 single rooms, 38 double rooms, five accessible rooms and a 1-bedroom apartment.
The Penha II University residence, in the city of Faro, was awarded 6.8 million euros and will consist of five floors, with a total construction area of 3,977 m2.
These 125 new beds are distributed among 71 single rooms, 24 double rooms, five adapted rooms and a 1-bedroom apartment.
“The two buildings will be constructed within the university campuses of Gambelas and Penha, thus providing a full experience of academic life, through the creation of a safe, comfortable and humanized environment, encouraging the adoption of environmentally sustainable behaviours”, highlighted the UAlg.
The construction of the new residences aims to “offer quality temporary accommodation for residents, ensure conditions of comfort and quality of life, encourage coexistence, camaraderie and community spirit, and balance community life with respect for the individuality and privacy of each one”, highlights the Algarve academy.
The rector of UAlg, Paulo Águas, quoted in the note, highlighted that accommodation continues to be “one of the biggest priorities” of the Algarve Academy and that, with the construction of the two new residences, “an important contribution will be made to reducing barriers to access to higher education for displaced students”.
In terms of residence renovation, Paulo Águas assured that UAlg “is at the top of the country”, having renovated 427 beds in six residences.
The construction of the two new residences is part of the National Higher Education Accommodation Plan (PNAES), with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
