Since its first edition in 2017, establishing itself as one of the most innovative in the Iberian Peninsula, attracting thousands of visitors at each edition.
This unique event reinterprets border history and identity through art and culture, transforming the banks of the Guadiana River into a living stage of memories, traditions and artistic expressions. Inspired by the reality of smuggling, which for decades was a way of survival for local populations, the festival recreates the atmosphere of the 1930s and 1940s, where scarcity and ingenuity shaped the lives of many families.
Through a diverse program, the festival takes visitors on a journey through time and emotions. The period market, which occupies the picturesque streets of the two villages, transports us to an authentic setting where ancient trades, traditional taverns and interactions with characters from other times come together.
One of the most iconic parts of the festival is the floating bridge that, for three days, connects Portugal and Spain in a symbolic gesture of unity and sharing. With the motto “The dreams of local communities can be achieved”, this temporary pedestrian crossing allows visitors to explore the two villages as one area, celebrating the common identity of both peoples.
The full program will be announced next month through the social networks of Alcoutim City Council and Festival do Contrabando.
