In addition to the rain, the depression will bring strong winds and waves until tomorrow, mainly to the central and southern regions of mainland Portugal.
Therefore, the districts of Lisbon, Setúbal and Leiria are under yellow warning until 9 pm today, then changing to orange until 6 am on Thursday due to the forecast of periods of rain, which may occasionally be accompanied by thunderstorms.
Also due to heavy rain, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) placed the districts of Faro and Beja under yellow warning between 3 pm and 9 pm, then changing to orange until 6 am on Thursday.
The IPMA also placed the districts of Évora, Santarém and Portalegre under yellow warning due to rain from 6 pm today and 6 am on Thursday and Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra between midnight and 6 am on Thursday.
Orange warnings were also issued due to the forecast of strong winds with gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour (km/h), reaching 110 km/h in the highlands, for the districts of Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga between 00:00 and 06:00 on Thursday.
The IPMA issued a yellow warning of strong winds for all districts on the mainland from this afternoon until 3:00 pm on Thursday.
The districts of Faro, Setúbal, Lisbon, Leiria and Beja are still under a yellow warning due to rough seas between 3 pm today and 10 pm on Thursday.
In turn, the Madeira archipelago was also placed under orange alert, due to the forecast of strong winds (from 12 pm today) and rough seas, only in the case of Porto Santo (from 9 pm).
The Madeira archipelago will also be under an orange warning due to rain until 12:00 today and wind with gusts of up to 95 km/h between 12:00 and 21:00 today, both then changing to yellow.
According to the IPMA, by Friday the total accumulated rainfall is expected to be between 70 and 100 millimeters in the Central and South regions and may be locally higher on the Central coast.
Snow may fall at the highest points of Serra da Estrela, lowering the altitude to 1,200/1,400 meters on Friday.
Depression Martinho will also bring an increase in wind intensity, which will blow from the south/southeast with gusts that can reach values of around 80 to 90 km/h, especially on the coast, and 110 to 120 km/h in high areas.
Sea swell is also expected, with southwest waves measuring 4 to 5 meters south of Cape Carvoeiro and 3 to 4 meters north of the aforementioned cape.
According to the national operational deputy of ANEPC, Alexandre Penha, the forecasts of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) for “the next 48 hours” indicate “a general worsening of the weather, characterised by an increase in precipitation” and “wind”, at the end of Wednesday and early Thursday morning.
ANEPC also reported, based on information from the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), that, in the next 48 hours, in the Tagus basin, “in urban basins there may be an increase in flow rates, possibility of flooding” and, in urban basins and riverbanks in the West, based on hourly precipitation values obtained from weather forecasts, “in urban basins (Cascais, Oeiras, Lisbon, Loures, Odivelas, Setúbal) flow rates with a return period of between five and 10 years may be reached”.
