The five in question, Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD), BCP, Santander Totta, BPI and Montepio collected €1.88 billion in commissions, €102.8 million more than the year before.
Each of these banks charged an average of €5 million a day in commissions last year.
BCP charged the most, collecting €666.7 million from its clients from commissions, €22.9 million more than in 2016.
Two other large banks in Portugal Novo Banco and Crédito Agrícola, have not presented their 2017 accounts yet.
Bank commissions have been debated widely in recent years as banks have altered their prices and started charging for routine operations such as maintaining the account or money transfers) to compensate for a drop in other sources of income.
