André Silva, who is still just 21, had put the home side ahead following a flowing team move - with Ronaldo at the heart of it - to put Fernando Santos’ side ahead, and his delightful touch set up the Real Madrid star to smash home a second before half-time.
André Silva’s audacious back heel enabled the Portugal captain to arrow a long range effort into the bottom right-hand corner of the net giving the Hungarian and former Liverpool keeper Péter Gulácsi no chance.
Ronaldo then made it fifteen goals in fourteen appearances for the national side with a fine free-kick after the break as the European champions made it four wins in a row in Group B.
Ronaldo now has seventy goals for his country just a goal behind Miroslav Klose, the former German international, who is third in the European list of international top scorers.
Hungarian goal machine Sándor Kocsis who found the back of the net on seventy-five occasions in just sixty-eight appearances is in second place but top of the tree is the incomparable Ferenc Puskás who scored eighty-four goals in eighty-five games as a member of the Mighty Magyars who racked up thirty-two consecutive victories in the early 1950s.
Portugal are in second place in Group B, three points behind leaders Switzerland.
With only one team from each group qualifying automatically, the deciding match could be the last game in the series when Portugal entertain Switzerland on 10 October.
In their next World Cup qualifier Portugal travel to Latvia on 9 June.
Just over a week later, the European Champions participate in the Confederations Cup in Russia where they will meet Mexico, Russia and New Zealand in Group A.
