The flights and fuel to power them were offered by local Portimão flying expert Ken Tomsett in his 1952 RAF aircraft, in exchange for donations for the Canil.
The scenic flight slots – 10 minute harbour-viewing trips or a 20 minute coastline flight with loop the loop – were fully booked up throughout the day, however flights had to be stopped at 3pm due to the deteriorating weather conditions.
In total, over €300 was raised, plus a further €62 from a donation tin and photos of the event, selling for one euro each, and many food donations.
The much-needed funds will be put towards helping with medical bills for the dogs and cats at the municipal kennel.
The Friends of Canil Portimão is a group of volunteers who fund-raise and give their time to work at the kennels, making conditions better for the animals therein, as well as improving their quality of life by taking them out for walks, grooming, helping socialise and re-home them, etc.
The group is always open to new volunteers, to help walk the dogs on a Thursday morning, starting 9.30am, and to help socialise them.
They are also in desperate need of foster homes, who look after the dogs and cats before being sent to new homes abroad, to open much needed spaces for other animals to be taken in at the kennel.
The association particularly needs a Dutch-speaking person to take dogs heading to Holland to the airport and help with the check-in.
