The data come from the National Statistics Institute (INE) and were released in a statement, by the Ministry of Agriculture.

“Portuguese wines have shown a remarkable evolution, largely driven by exports. The data now released by the INE underline this, while at the same time shows the resilience of the sector”, said the Minister of Agriculture, Maria do Céu Antunes.

According to INE, between January and November 2021, wine exports grew by 3.8 percent in volume, 8.6 percent in value and 4.6 percent in average price, compared to the same period of the previous year.

In the same period, wines from the Douro Demarcated Region increased by 11 percent in terms of quantity and 18 percent in terms of value, approaching a turnover of €547 million.

According to the statement, November 2021 “was a particularly positive month” for sales of Douro and Port wines, “having been the best month of all, since the beginning of 2019, in terms of business volume, both in the national market and in terms of exports”.

Since the beginning of last year and until November, the top five of destination markets for national wine exports, in terms of value, were France, the United States of America (USA), the United Kingdom, Brazil and Germany.

“The Ministry of Agriculture has focused on the close monitoring of producers and farmers, defining and implementing the necessary measures to guarantee predictability and stability, and we want to congratulate them on these results”, said Maria do Céu Antunes.
