The price of a basket of essential products has increased by
around 20 euros since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, reaching a total of
203.72 euros. Fresh hake, salmon, cooking oil, chicken and Maria biscuits were
the five products that increased the most since then, with increases of more
than 26%, according to accounts carried out by the Portuguese Association for
Consumer Protection (Deco).
The Russian invasion of Ukraine further accelerated the rise
in energy and transport prices, aggravating the escalation of raw material
prices. This trend is already reflected in the inflation rate in Portugal,
which in June reached 8.7%, the highest value since 1992, and is also reflected
at European level, with prices accelerating by 8.6% in the Eurozone last month,
a two-decade high.
Most expensive
Among the products that registered the biggest price
increase since the beginning of the war and until last Wednesday, Deco
highlights “fresh hake (up 46%), salmon (up 40%), 100% vegetable cooking oil
(up 38%), whole chicken (up 31%), wafer Maria (up 26%), cake flour (up 23%),
turkey steak (up 21%), ground roasted coffee (up 21%), carolino rice (21% more)
and pork chops (20% more).
Can someone please explain to me, how the war in Ukraine is responsible for the rise in price of fresh hake and salmon?

It's simple Greg - Portugal will raise taxes and lower living standards with every pretext it can possibly cling to. Poverty is a cult (except for the very few privileged). Portugal is the epitome in EU of how to sustain an exclusive society (and do nothing about it )

In reply to question on increase in price of salmon and hake quite simply, transport and electricity costs increasing.

The most annoying increment is on cooking oil and salmon, more than 100% increment. Maybe, America and NATO should have let Russia be. Looks like it is an European China.

Maria Biscuits - that´s full mobilisation territory.

IKEA is the biggest increase so far!
More than 85 per cent increase on tea candles to 6.5 euros. More expensive than any other country in Europe for the same article in the same company's shops.
Strong Sales and Marketing or what?

The invasion on Ukraine has not helped with price increases but what’s happen post Covid pandemic is that most countries are debt big time and Portugal is no exception so through monetary policy, governments are paying for this debt with inflation
