André Ventura argued that we have seen on television “the absolute and live failure of an agency that should never have been created”.
The leader of Chega maintained that AIMA was a “huge failure of the previous Government and that the Government of Luís Montenegro insists on prolonging it”, claiming that, with the end of SEF, there was “no speeding up of the regularisation process” of immigrants and “all police competence was lost”.
“What is happening now shows how out of control immigration in Portugal is. (…) It is the absolute failure of the Government’s immigration strategy,” he said, claiming that “the country is subject to being suspended from the Schengen area.”
André Ventura said that the PSD and the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, spoke out against the creation of AIMA, and had committed themselves in the electoral campaign to “reverse the extinction of the SEF”, accusing them of backtracking on electoral promises.
“Now they say that after all they will maintain AIMA because the European Union (EU) is this and that. In other words, they are going back on what they promised: they are lax with immigration and immigration control,” he said.
Asked whether the SEF should return, André Ventura said yes and that its inspectors should be restored, “who have know-how that no one else has”.
“But above all, it is important that we reestablish a basic rule that I think whoever is watching us understands: only those who have a work contract, or a promise of a work contract, or at least a means of housing, can enter Portugal,” he said.
When asked whether Chega is in favour of remaining in the Schengen area, Ventura replied: “It’s clear”.
“The Schengen area is part of our tradition within the EU, it is what guarantees that there is control at the external border in the EU,” he said.
In these statements to journalists, Ventura also said that he has “a real suspicion” that the prime minister announcing the location of the new Lisbon airport was a way of “diverting attention from the issue of the migration agency”.
“It is at least a very strange coincidence,” he said, calling on the prime minister to focus on the location of the airport on another day, but to change immigration policy now.
Without immigration from western countries. Portugal can file for bankruptcy.

The way hate and racism is increasing against immigrants for past 6 months are really a matter of concerns. Portugal is a very peaceful country and its people as well. Continuously speaking against immigrants gives a clear message of sense of authenticity to civil people. Immigrants and need everyones co-operation (Position and Opposition Parties). If you do not need immigrants then please stop the immigration but if you do, then do it with open heart. That's a request to everyone.

is immigration out of control? I think it is an illusion. The number of babies and young people you see in Portugal is far less than in other countries like the UK, in fact worryingly low in my opinion. Who else is going to work, pay taxes and do the jobs the Portuguese, and the retired foreigners do not want to do?

Agreed. No one has a right to walk into a country without a proper invitation. Are we to suppose that an interloper into someone's house is thereby a "guest"? Of course not and the same applies to nations. Nations are the private property of their people and should be respected as such. What one has to be aware of however is that EU bureaucrats in fact desire the dismantling of all European boundaries.

Tony is absolutely right. I know for a fact there are people who arrive here with no means of supporting themselves. They then have to rely on various charities to survive.

SEF employees lacked training, systems and knowledge of basic residence permit requirements. Addressing those gaps, under whatever organization you call it, is fundamental. Separately, the evidence of far right groups spreading fear and hatred must be addressed.

I do not like the fact that people jump on the "racism" bandwagon whenever someone says that immigration should be controlled. Immigration should, and must by law be controlled, as any country should know exactly who seeking to live in the country.
Immigration should equally look at what the contribution to the country, the society and the community will be for those entering to live there. You can have 20,000 immigrants entering the country, making their contributions financially, through much-needed skills, and participating and innovating within the economy, or you can have 20,000 people come to Portugal for free healthcare and education, or living off social security that they have never contributed to. At the very least a government should strive to do what is good for the country, its culture and its people.

I agree that the services are a mess, but don’t see how reviving an already failed SEF would help. The Chega leader seems more determined to undermine the government and foster suspicion and dislike for immigrants. He’s also pandering to the police and dismissed SEF but I bet he’s not supporting updated equipment for AIMA so they could process things faster, and I sure didn’t hear anything about pay raises etc…which would motivate and energize people.

Immigration should not be controlled, and borders are a mere illusion. The sooner people realise this and do away with this outdated capitalist, colonialist, racist concept the better. One world.

If a right wing party leader were to announce that immigration is now UNDER control, I'd be worried.

In my opinion there has to be control of foreigners coming to Portugal, you can call me a racist or whatever you think. That's the only way to keep out terrorists, and free loaders, by screening out the bad apples. I'm happy to support people that are hard workers, and law abiding, and come to Portugal to work, and help Portugal develop and stay safe on the streets, so people can work and enjoy life, freely and safely. I would prefer people with a Christian background. Portugal was founded by Christian Kings.

@Tony You make some excellent points. Immigration needs to be sensible and tightly controlled. Borders serve the same purpose as the door of your house. Only a fool would leave it wide open. Western countries are being gaslit and guilted to serve a globalist agenda that is not in the best interests of the public but lines the pockets of human traffickers who profit from uncontrolled mass migration.
