Italy is set to build the world’s longest suspension bridge across the Messina Strait, connecting Sicily to the mainland.

Initiated by Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, whose coalition took power in 2022, the €4.6 billion project is scheduled to begin in late 2024, with potential EU funding to support its completion.
The rail and road connection could potentially ease the pressure on the overcrowded ferry services that shuttle cars, lorries and trains over the Messina Strait.
