This measure is part of the tax simplification package presented by the government, at a joint press conference of the Ministers of Finance and Economy, after the Council of Ministers.

Currently, the IUC is paid in the month of registration of the vehicle, but "many people forget which month they bought the car, or it was purchased second-hand" and this generates delays in payment and fines, pointed out the Minister of Finance.

The Government has therefore decided to establish a month for the payment of IUC, if it is up to 100 euros, which will be February.

If it is above 100 euros, it will be made in two instalments, of equal value, paid in February and October, said Joaquim Miranda Sarmento.

The governor also highlighted that "this is a measure that will only come into effect in 2026" and that the IUC will be due by the car owner at the end of the year prior to the tax due.
