Hydropower emerged as the largest contributor, accounting for 28% of the nation’s electricity consumption, followed closely by wind energy at 27%. Solar power, a rapidly growing sector in Portugal, provided 10% of the total energy mix, while biomass contributed 6%. This diverse range of renewable sources underscores Portugal’s balanced approach to energy sustainability. Significant growth was recorded in the solar sector, which expanded by 37% compared to the previous year, reaching its highest contribution yet to national consumption. Hydropower also saw a substantial increase of 24%, bolstered by favorable weather conditions that provided above-average water availability for energy production.

Portugal’s renewable energy success can be attributed to a combination of factors. Strategic investments in renewable infrastructure, technological advancements, and favorable natural conditions have all played pivotal roles. The government’s strong support and commitment to decarbonization have further strengthened the country’s position as a clean energy leader. Continued expansion of renewable installations and the integration of modern technologies have increased efficiency and output across all sectors of the energy market.

The surge in renewable energy production has had a tangible impact on fossil fuel consumption, with the demand for natural gas in electricity generation plummeting by 56%. This shift has not only reduced greenhouse gas emissions but also decreased Portugal’s reliance on imported fossil fuels. However, despite the record-breaking renewable production, imported energy accounted for 20% of the country’s electricity demand in 2024, highlighting the need for further advancements in energy independence.

Portugal’s achievement of meeting 71% of its energy needs through renewables is a testament to the viability of a clean energy future.
