Named after former President of the Republic Mário Soares, the new Loures bypass, in the district of Lisbon, begins next to Parque Adão Barata (City Park) and ends at the Jardim Major Rosa Bastos roundabout.

Speaking to Lusa, the Mayor of Loures, Ricardo Leão (PS), said that this new road will “resolve the chaotic traffic that builds up in the city centre”, being an alternative to those who travel on Rua da República and Estrada Nacional 8 (EN8)

“The previous executive (chaired by the CDU) reduced Rua da República to a single lane and this creates chaos in traffic and difficulties for rescue vehicles. The new bypass will help solve this problem,” highlighted the mayor.

The new urban bypass in Loures is 1.1 kilometres long and represented a municipal investment of around 4 million euros, allowing the expansion of the cycle network, with the creation of a segregated cycle path, with parking and rest areas.

The creation of an urban park is also planned, with several green areas, pedestrian paths and urban furniture to support the areas intended for leisure and rest.

Ricardo Leão highlighted that the construction of this infrastructure “opens new horizons for the east zone of Loures”, allowing “preparation for the expansion of the city”.
