According to Jornal Económico, the unemployment rate in Portugal stood at 6.2% in January, which represented a slight decrease of 0.2 percentage points compared to January and December 2024, according to data revealed by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) this Monday.
The active population increased to 5,509.4 thousand compared to January (102.9 thousand; 1.9%), October (42.4 thousand; 0.8%) and December 2024 (26.5 thousand; 0.5%).
The employed population rose to 5,167.3 thousand compared to the previous month (33.9 thousand; 0.7%), three months before (59.0 thousand; 1.2%) and the same month last year (107.9 thousand; 2.1%).
In turn, the unemployed population registered a decrease to 342.1 thousand compared to the previous month (7.4 thousand; 2.1%), three months earlier (16.6 thousand; 4.6%) and the same month in 2024 (5.0 thousand; 1.4%).
Furthermore, between December 2024 and January 2025, the inactivity rate was estimated at 31.1%, the lowest value observed since February 1998.
Lastly, the inactive population grew to 2,484.8 thousand compared to the previous month (5.6 thousand; 0.2%) and three months earlier (7.5 thousand; 0.3%), having remained practically identical in relation to the same month of the previous year.
