Drawn by its stunning coastline, exceptional quality of life, and compelling investment opportunities, a growing number of U.S. buyers are making the Algarve their new home. With United Airlines’ upcoming launch of its first-ever nonstop flights from Newark/New York to the Algarve, this trend is expected to accelerate, making relocation and investment more convenient than ever.
The Surge in American Buyers
Since 2019, the number of Americans purchasing property in Portugal has tripled, according to the Portuguese Real Estate Association. In 2022 alone, U.S. buyers accounted for approximately 10% of all foreign property purchases in the country, signaling a fundamental shift in demand. While Lisbon and the Central Algarve have traditionally been the focal points for international buyers, many Americans are now exploring lesser-known areas that offer an authentic Portuguese experience alongside luxury and affordability.
Several key factors are driving this migration trend:
· Remote Work & Work-Life Balance: The rise of remote work has led Americans to seek destinations that provide a superior quality of life. Portugal’s strong infrastructure, affordable cost of living, and favorable visa programmes make it an attractive choice.
· Investment Potential: Compared to the U.S., Portugal’s real estate market remains highly competitive, offering strong appreciation potential, particularly in the Algarve.
· Lifestyle & Climate: The Algarve’s year-round sunshine, breathtaking beaches, and relaxed atmosphere provide an ideal retreat from the fast pace of American city life.

Almost all Americans I have encountered moved away from the US because of political reasons. Not a single mention of that here.

Why, nobody wants them here besides the real estate companies

Americans are welcome to visit anytime, but please do not come here to live. We are already struggling to find a house to live and we do not need more people to inflate the housing market.
