According to Notícias ao Minuto, more than 255,000 voters are registered to vote, according to the census data of the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Administration.

In ballot order, CDU (PCP/PEV), PSD, Livre, JPP, Nova Direita, PAN, Força Madeira (PTP/MPT/RIR), PS, IL, PPM, BE, Chega, ADN and CDS are the political forces to compete in the single constituency of the archipelago.

The PSD currently has 19 regional elected officials, the PS 11, the JPP nine, the Chega three and the CDS two. PAN and IL have a seat and there is also an independent deputy (ex-Chega).

The early elections take place 10 months after the previous ones, following the approval of a motion of censure presented by Chega - which justified it with the judicial investigations involving members of the Regional Government, including the president, Miguel Albuquerque (PSD) - and the dissolution of the Legislative Assembly by the President of the Republic.

Albuquerque, successor of Alberto João Jardim, has governed since 2015, when he managed to secure an absolute majority (24 seats).

In 2019, to guarantee this goal held by the social democrats since 1976 it was necessary to form a coalition government with the CDS and in the following regionals, in 2023, with the two parties competing together, only a parliamentary incidence agreement with the PAN allowed to hold the advantage.

It was the withdrawal of political confidence from PAN that led Albuquerque to resign in early 2024, after his status as a defendant in a corruption case was known. In May, he won again, but not even an agreement with the CDS was enough for the absolute majority.

In the regional legislative elections, the representative of the Republic, a position held by Ireneu Barreto, invites a political force to form a government based on the results (which must be published), after the auscultation of the parties with a parliamentary seat.
