In a statement, the IPMA indicates that the earthquake was recorded at the stations of the Azores Archipelago Seismic Network at 20:48 local time (21:48 in Lisbon) and had its epicentre approximately 70 kilometres southeast of São Sebastião, on Terceira Island.

“According to the information available, this earthquake was felt,” said IPMA in a note sent to newsrooms.

In a second statement about the event, published on its website, the IPMA attributed a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale.

“This earthquake, according to the information available to date, did not cause any personal or material damage and was felt with a maximum intensity of III/IV (modified Mercalli scale) in the parishes of Candelária, Feteiras, Ginetes and Mosteiros”, on the island of São Miguel, he added.

It was also felt with less intensity in the parishes of Arrifes, Capelas, Fajã de Baixo, Fajã de Cima, Fenais da Luz, São Sebastian, São José, São Pedro, Relva, Remedios, Face of the Dog (Deliverance and São Roque), Santa Barbara, Santo António, São Vicente Ferreira, Pilar da Brittany, Santa Clara, Calhetas, Fenais da Ajuda, Maia, Pico da Pedra, Rabo de Peixe, Ribeira Grande (Conceição and Matriz), Ribeira Seca, Ribeirinha, Santa Barbara, Água de Alto, Ponta Garça, Vila Franca do Campo (Saint Peter and Saint Miguel), all on the island of São Miguel.

According to the IPMA, on Terceira Island, the tremor was felt in the parishes of Our Lady of Conception, Santa Luzia, São Pedro, Porto Judeu, Posto Santo, Ribeirinha, São Bartolomeu de Regatos, São Bento, Terra Chã, Fonte do Bastardo, Lajes, Praia da Vitória (Santa Cruz), São Brás and Vila Nova.

According to the Azores Seismovolcanic Surveillance and Information Center (CIVISA), the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.6 and its epicenter was approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Porto Judeu (Terceira).

“According to the information available so far, the earthquake was felt with a maximum intensity of IV (Modified Mercalli scale) in the municipalities of Angra do Heroísmo, Praia da Vitória, Ponta Delgada and Ribeira Grande”, on the islands of Terceira and São Miguel, said CIVISA.

The event was also felt with intensity III/IV in the municipalities of Lagoa and Vila Franca do Campo, on the island of São Miguel.
