On Wednesday, March 5, she led her inaugural class in the university’s prestigious Master’s in Culture Studies program, attended by master’s and PhD students, faculty, ambassadors, and members of civil society.
The course explores the intersection of arts, diplomacy, and cultural exchange, examining how cultural diplomacy fosters dialogue and strengthens international relations. Levine’s role will further develop these connections, bringing her extensive diplomatic experience to the classroom.
“Universidade Católica Portuguesa has built a leading program in cultural studies, and I’m excited to contribute my experience in arts diplomacy to this dynamic academic environment,” said Randi Charno Levine. “I hope to inspire the next generation of diplomats and leaders to continue strengthening our people-to-people ties through universal connectors like art and music.”
During her tenure as U.S. ambassador to Portugal from 2022 to 2025, Levine prioritized cultural diplomacy as a strategic tool to strengthen U.S.-Portugal relations. She spearheaded initiatives such as the Arts & Embassies program, hip-hop diplomacy, Black History Month concerts, and culinary exchange programs, using cultural engagement to build meaningful connections with Portuguese officials and the public. Her work in Portugal reinforced her belief in the power of the arts as a vehicle for diplomacy, a focus she will now bring to her academic role at UCP.
“The university is delighted to have Randi Levine spearheading a field that is crucial to societal development,” said University Rector Isabel Gil. “Crafting a world of opportunity for all requires the advancement of the arts. Faculty and students are tremendously excited about the new Honorary Professorship.”
The Master’s in Culture Studies program at UCP is affiliated with the Lisbon Consortium, an international network fostering collaboration between academia and the cultural sector. Future engagements as part of Levine’s role will include guest lectures, panel discussions, and collaborative projects exploring the evolving role of cultural diplomacy in global relations.
Universidade Católica Portuguesa is one of Portugal’s leading institutions for higher education and research. Its Master’s in Culture Studies program is ranked second globally by Eduniversal and is recognized for fostering interdisciplinary research in cultural policy, media studies, and arts management.
