The scientists used novel full-waveform immersion, detecting seismic anomalies resembling lost plate fragments in regions without ancient record of subduction, which indicates the existence of some unknown material.
This observation questions the deep-seated assumption that relates to plate tectonics and the ultimate result of subducted plates.
