Hospitalised patients and prisoners will also be able to vote in advance, as well as voters registered in the national territory and abroad.
Who can vote in advance?
According to the website of the National Elections Commission (CNE), all voters registered in the national territory can vote in advance on the move, one week before the election date, that is, on May 11th. However, to opt for this option you must register.
How to register to vote?
To do so, voters must communicate their intention between the 4th and 8th of May via electronic means at www.votoantecipado.pt or by post, sending a letter to the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Administration, Praça do Comércio, Ala Oriental, 1149-015 LISBOA.
The letter must include certain information, namely the full name, date of birth, civil identification number, address, the polling station where you intend to vote and the email address and/or telephone contact, and must be received by May 8th.
How to vote on May 11th?
On May 11, voters must go to the polling station in their chosen municipality, identify themselves (preferably using their CPF or ID) and indicate the parish where they are registered.
According to the TRE, after voting, the voter receives a duplicate of the security sticker that serves as proof of exercising the right to vote.
Can people who register to vote in advance, but are unable to do so return later?
Yes, you will be able to vote on election day (May 18), and the polls will be open between 8:00 am and 7:00 pm.
How do prisoners and hospitalized patients vote?
Prisoners and hospitalised patients must communicate their intention to vote in advance by April 28th via electronic means at www.votoantecipado.pt or by post, sending a letter to the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Administration, Praça do Comércio, Ala Oriental, 1149-015 LISBOA).
In the request, they must indicate the number of their civil identification document (citizen card or identity card) and attach a document proving the impediment invoked, which may be issued by the director of the prison establishment (in the case of imprisoned voters) or by the attending physician and confirmed by the management of the hospital establishment (in the case of hospitalised patients).
Can only voters who are imprisoned or hospitalised make the request?
No. According to the CNE, if the communication is made electronically, at the request of the individual, this can be done "by the director of the establishment, who will attach a nominal list of voters who expressed their desire to exercise their right to vote in advance and, in the case of those admitted to a hospital, declarations from their respective attending physicians".
When do prisoners and hospitalised patients vote?
Between May 5th and 8th, the mayor will go to these establishments to collect votes.
Who can vote in advance while abroad?
According to the CNE, voters registered in Portugal who are abroad on election day can vote in advance as long as the trip is “due to the exercise of public or private functions”, in an official representation of the national team, organised by a sports federation with public sports utility status or in the case of being a “student, researcher, teacher or research scholarship holder and is abroad in a higher education institution, research units or similar recognised by the competent ministry”.
A sick voter receiving treatment abroad or who lives with or accompanies the aforementioned voters may also vote in advance abroad.
When and where do voters living abroad vote?
Between May 6 and 8, voters registered in national territory and abroad must go to "the consular sections of embassies, consulates or external delegations of Portuguese public institutions previously defined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs", identifying themselves (preferably through their ID card) and indicating the parish where they are registered on the electoral roll.
