Rede 8 de Março is a national platform that brings together collectives, associations, political organizations, unions and individuals at the individual level and this is the second year in which they call for a feminist strike. Last year, according to the platform, 30,000 people participated in the demonstration.

The Feminist Strike will take place on 8 March to mark International Women's Day in the cities of Amarante, Braga, Coimbra, Évora, Faro, Lisbon, Porto, Viseu and Vila Real and Ponta Delgada.

The strike aims to “fight against discrimination, violence and inequality that persists on the streets, in schools, in the workplace, in justice and in the protection of victims of gender violence. Therefore, our struggle is to demand changes! ”, Say the organizers.

Rede 8 de Março justifies the strike by pointing out that in Portugal "male chauvinist violence kills, on average" two women each month.

The organization also calls attention to the fact that women represent 80 percent of cases of domestic violence and are victims of 90.7 percent of sexual crimes.

"Our call goes beyond a traditional strike - that is, a labour strike - our demands extend to the sphere of social reproduction, the sphere of domestic and family care, student life and consumer society", underlines the organization.

The platform also highlights that the aim is to unite women from all parts of the world, building networks of transnational solidarity, support and learning to combat inequalities.

The platform is also supported by the All Teachers Union (S.TO.P) and the Northern Teachers Union.
