“March has seen some very high levels of electronic prescriptions and even more than a million were issued some days”, the Portuguese NHS website said.

The electronic prescriptions mean that the doctor writes a prescription that is sent to the patient’s mobile phone with a code that they show the chemist to buy their drugs.

The system is expected to save about 18 million sheets of paper a year and first came on-line in 2016.
