These €420 million for the milk sector are the largest part of a wider €500 million package in aid for European farmers, formally announced Tuesday.

The amount given to each country was calculated depending on the 2014 production quotas, a system that was abolished on 31 March, said agriculture commissioner Phil Hogan.

The other €80 million, he said, were to go to pig farmers, who have been particularly hard hit by the falling price of pork following the Russian embargo.
