The warning covers the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Vila Real, Viseu, Bragança, Guarda and Castelo Branco and is valid between 9:00pm today and 9:00am on Tuesday.
The IPMA also placed the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria and Lisbon under a yellow weather warning due to rough seas, with northwest waves of 4 metres expected between 9:00am and 9:00pm on Tuesday.
The yellow warning is issued by the IPMA whenever the weather situation represents a risk for certain activities.
The IPMA forecasts for today in the northern and central regions of the continent little cloud, with periods of more cloudiness in the interior, where light and scattered showers may occur.
From the afternoon, the sky will gradually become very cloudy from the coast to the interior, with periods of rain later in the day, which should be in the form of snow above 1000/1200 metres of altitude.
Light to moderate winds are also expected from the east, sometimes blowing strongly in the highlands and ice or frost formation, especially inland.
In the southern region, skies are expected to be slightly cloudy, gradually becoming very cloudy from west to east from the end of the morning, with periods of rain at the end of the day, especially on the west coast.
The minimum temperatures will fluctuate between -5 degrees Celsius, in Guarda, and 6, in Faro and Lisbon, while the maximum between 9, in Guarda, and 18, in Faro.
