“In terms of infrastructure, we will carry out the necessary works. Let's zoom in. In this area where we are present [current VIP lounge] the future terminal will be expanded. This adds 30% to the useful area of the current airport”, revealed the president of the ANA Board of Directors at Ponta Delgada airport.
José Luís Arnaut spoke to journalists accompanied by the president of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, after a meeting between ANA (airport concessionaire) and the Azorean executive (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM). The work, which will begin in early 2024 and end in 2027, will expand João Paulo II Airport by four thousand square meters.
“I came here to demonstrate ANA’s commitment to the Azores. We always had it. We reiterate it. We are here to continue investing”, reinforced Arnaut. Recalling that the island of São Miguel now has seven new routes in the last year, the chairman of ANA recognized that the “growth” of tourism in the region “must have an infrastructure response”.
“You cannot stop the airport to do the work. We have to do the work with the airport up and running without harming passengers and movement. It’s very fine engineering,” he added. The concessionaire will also carry out other interventions to “improve the passenger experience” and guarantee “environmental sustainability”.
