For the fourth consecutive year, Street Art Cities is gearing up to crown the “Best Mural of 2024” in a global celebration of urban creativity. Street Art Cities is inviting street art lovers from around the world to help decide which mural will be awarded the “Best of 2024”. Following in the footsteps of previous winners like Diego As, Studio Giftig, and Sfhir, this year’s nominees include jaw-dropping creations from across the globe. A fresh lineup of 100 nominees will compete across three exciting categories: the much-acclaimed “Best of 2024” Award, the returning “Expert Choice” Award, and the newly introduced “Artist Choice” Award.

The best murals of 2024

Organised by Street Art Cities – a leading platform dedicated to cataloging and promoting street art – the awards highlight the diversity and cultural significance of this art form. Murals are nominated by art enthusiasts, local communities, and Street Art Cities’ network of ambassadors. Subsequently, winners are chosen based on a combination of public votes and expert evaluations, ensuring both community participation and artistic excellence.

As Tim Marschang, co-founder of Street Art Cities shares, “When we introduced the annual 'Best of' awards a couple of years ago, we witnessed the real value. It not only opened doors for the winners and every nominee but propelled artists on a new path in their careers. That's the biggest accomplishment for me, the public has learned to appreciate this art on the streets and really embraced it!”.

This year’s awards are particularly special for Portugal, with four murals from Lisbon’s region, plus one from Guarda’s district earning nominations. Each one of the murals tells a unique story, blending artistry with deep social meaning.

Portugal’s nominated murals:

1. AFONSOUL’s “Inner Feeling”

Created for the ‘Cor de Chelas’ event, this mural celebrates freedom and equality for women, inspired by the ongoing fight for women’s rights in a patriarchal society. It serves as a powerful symbol for International Women’s Day.

2. Sepher Awk’s First Large-Scale Mural

This debut building-sized mural, part of the Galeria de Arte Urbano project, blends personal growth with the social realities of Lisbon’s Vale neighbourhood. It marks a pivotal moment in Sepher Awk’s artistic journey.

3. Ricardo Romero’s Zambujal Project Mural

Reflecting the vibrant cultural fusion of Amadora’s Zambujal neighbourhood, Romero’s mural celebrates cooperation and inclusivity. The design incorporates patterns inspired by traditional drummer costumes, symbolising unity.

4. Vhils & Bordallo II Collaboration

This striking mural, also created for the ‘Cor de Chelas’ project, has been nominated in the “Expert Choice” category. It showcases a blend of the artists’ distinctive styles, exploring themes of identity and environmental consciousness.

5. Beyond Lisbon: Anamorphic Art in Guarda

Outside the capital, Nuno Miles’ anamorphic “Touro Raiano” has become a landmark in Guarda. This visually stunning mural is a top contender in the "Best of 2024" category, further cementing Portugal’s influence on the global street art scene.

Why these awards matter

The Street Art Cities Awards aren’t just about finding the best mural – they’re about celebrating the stories and passion behind these works of art. Street art has evolved far beyond graffiti tags and it’s now an integral part of our urban spaces, giving life to blank walls and bringing communities together.

As the co-founder of Street Art Cities further explains, “When I started sharing these breathtaking murals on our Instagram stories it was merely to showcase all the beautiful artworks I found. I could have never imagined the overall impact on urban art”.

Street Art Cities: more than a platform

Since its founding in 2016, Street Art Cities has grown from a small passion project into the largest global platform dedicated to street art. It is the place where users can discover, document, and celebrate urban art.

At the moment, the platform features almost 1,000 artworks just in Lisbon and tens of thousands more worldwide. Street Art Cities not only connects enthusiasts with murals and hidden gems, but it also fosters collaborations with governments. Through events, tours, and exhibitions, it bridges the gap between the digital and physical worlds, preserving the nature of street art while making it a vital part of our cultural landscape.
