In the municipality of Seia, the traditional clayware production from Paranhos da Beira and Carvalhal da Louça has been listed on the National Register of Certified Traditional Artisanal Productions. According to the paperwork that is linked to the register, the pottery of Paranhos da Beira and Carvalhal da Louça "is distinguished from the other national pottery centres, mainly due to the types of pieces produced," which date back to the 19th century. The Rancho Folclórico de Paranhos da Beira, a local folklore group, is the designated promoter of this artisanal craft.
The next step for the community is to secure the geographical indication of this traditional production with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI, IP). In September 2024, the Advisory Committee for the Certification of Traditional Artisan Productions gave a favourable opinion on the registration request, and no opposition was filed during the set objection period.
According to the registration documents, the pottery of Paranhos da Beira and Carvalhal da Louça is unique within Portugal, distinguished by its specialised forms and techniques. These traditional designs have remained consistent for over a century, as evidenced by pieces displayed at the Paranhos da Beira Museum Centre. The craft focuses on utilitarian pottery, which innovations are permitted only if they preserve the traditional essence and typology of use the original pieces.
In 2017, the Paranhos da Beira Folklore Group established the Paranhos da Beira Museum Centre in a repurposed primary school. The centre serves as a vital hub for preserving this heritage, featuring exhibitions, a “Potter’s Workshop,” and a laboratory for hands-on experimentation with traditional pottery techniques. The initiative is supported by two active potters dedicated to keeping this centuries-old craft alive.
