"Renewable energy production reached a new historical record in Portugal. On January 27, at 7:15pm, it reached 10,845 megawatts (MW), at a time when the Portuguese electricity system was exporting around 2,890 MW", reports the manager of the national energy networks in a statement.
The previous maximum was dated March 8, 2024, at 8:00 pm, with production of 10,434 MW.
In the first 27 days of this year, national electricity consumption was supplied with 72% renewable energy, which is in line with that recorded in 2024 at the same time (around 71%).
From January 1 to 27, 2025, electricity consumption was supplied by 34% by wind energy, 28% by hydro energy, 5% by solar energy and 5% by biomass.
Natural gas production represented 14% of consumption and the import balance was also 14%, details Aneel.
"These records confirm that Portugal has maintained a sustainable trajectory in the progressive incorporation of endogenous renewable sources while maintaining the primary objectives of security of supply and quality of service in the National Electricity System", highlights the company led by Rodrigo Costa.
In 2024, renewable production totalled 36.7 terawatt-hours (TWh), the highest value ever in the national electricity system, driven by the growth of renewable installations and the globally favourable conditions observed.
Overall, renewables supplied 71% of national consumption last year.
