With an annual turnover of €16 million (excluding real estate developments) and a team of 200 dedicated professionals, the group has transformed environmental responsibility from an abstract concept to a comprehensive operational strategy. "Sustainability is not just an option; it's our fundamental duty to protect the environment we live and work in," says Patricia Buerer, CEO of the group.
Water conservation takes center stage in the company’s approach. Honoring previous achievements, the group has been awarded the prestigious Save Water certification from Turismo de Portugal. Measures include automated timer taps, flow reducers and strategic landscaping that prioritize native, water-saving plants. At Quinta do Paraíso, where one of the oldest and largest pools in Carvoeiro is being remodeled, even pool design has been re-imagined as reducing the pool’s depth significantly cuts water usage and maintenance costs. Elsewhere, pool covers are used to reduce evaporation. And throughout the group’s villas and apartments, guests are encouraged to minimize towel and linen changes to contribute to water and energy conservation.
The transition towards green energy is equally impressive. Photovoltaic panels power communal areas, from swimming pools to irrigation systems, significantly reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources. The group aims to operate a fully electric vehicle fleet, supported by strategically installed charging points and small, fully electric vehicles already in use within the resort premises.
Reaching beyond a quest for water and energy efficiency, environmental responsibility extends to every aspect of operations. The group has implemented comprehensive recycling programs, installing eco-points for glass, paper, cardboard, and plastic. Cleaning and laundry products have been switched to biodegradable alternatives, reducing chemical waste by over 60 percent, and guest accommodations feature dedicated recycling bins encouraging participation.
The group’s commitment to sustainability also extends beyond guest relations. Employee engagement is considered crucial to this company’s sustainability journey. Department heads discuss environmental initiatives with their teams, guiding the integration of sustainable practices into daily tasks, such as turning off unused lights, managing air conditioning, and improving transportation and logistics efficiency.
These efforts align with a broader vision embraced by owner Andreas Stocker: to lead a €100 million development project in the region, focusing on innovation and job creation while preserving the area's beautiful heritage. Sustainability remains a core part of this vision, attracting guests and owners who care about the environment. Carvoeiro Clube Group is not just developing and managing properties but leading a movement toward more responsible tourism. Says Andreas Stocker: 'To us, sustainability is more than a strategy, it’s a commitment to future generations.
