According to data released by the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP), vehicles from the company founded by Elon Musk suffered the biggest drop among the best-selling brands in the country.
Between January and March, 2,145 Tesla brand light cars were registered in Portugal, a drop of 25.7% compared to the same period last year. As a whole, this market shrank by 0.8% in the first quarter of 2025. However, Tesla's sales decline is more impressive if we look only at the electric car segment. Sales in this market grew again at a rate of 27.1%, and, among the most popular brands, no one fell more than the North American brand.
Still, in the electric segment, Tesla continues to be the best-selling brand here, but this advantage is decreasing due to increased competition from Chinese manufacturers and beyond. The biggest increases were for Peugeot, which more than doubled sales and is in second place, and the Chinese BYD, which also more than doubled registrations and reached fourth position.
In the general table of registered vehicles, Tesla was the 13th best-selling brand, in a ranking that has Peugeot, Renault, Mercedes and Dacia at the top.
According to data released by Reuters, Tesla sales fell in the first quarter also in France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. In some of these markets, the declines are around 50%, quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year.
The new version of the Tesla Model Y, the brand's best-seller, will be arriving on the market, which may partly explain these drops, with interested parties preferring to wait to buy the updated model.
Did anyone nazi this coming?

So nothing to do with the deeply unpopular behaviour of Musk and his association with Trump then?

I bought a new car at the end of January (not a Tesla) and am still waiting for the registration document from IMT. I'm told it could take up to five months?

You’ve failed to deliver the context.
Tesla has globally switched over the production to the new Model Y. That means they haven’t produced the world’s best selling car for most of the quarter. You cannot sell vehicles that haven’t been produced.
The recent numbers point to excellent sales of the new Model Y.

As a Canadian who loves to winter in Portugal (because of the people and climate), there is no question that Musk's (unelected) political activities have and will continue to hurt his brand.
