“The Jardins Abertos festival emerged as a strategy and response to the desire to promote a strong and positive connection with nature, combining sustainability with the urban context”, reads the description of this event, which has been held annually in the city of Lisbon since 2017, opening gardens, community gardens, palaces and innovative projects.
In a statement, the organisation says that the 2025 edition “invites us to imagine a future where the city and nature converge in a place of respect and balance”, showing new spaces such as the garden of MACAM - Armando Martins Museum of Contemporary Art, the gardens of Bombarda (former Hospital Miguel Bombarda) and the garden of Caracol da Penha (Arroios).
“We present activities and gardens that invite us to reflect on the future we want to cultivate together. Placing greater emphasis on action, we propose an encounter between people and nature through collective gardening activities and practical workshops, open to everyone, centered on direct contact with the earth and plants”.
To mark the beginning and end of the festival, “citizen science moments will be held, with visitors invited to identify species of plants, insects and other organisms”.
Elements of groups and collectives such as the Verde association, Batoto Yetu, Biodiversity4All, Future Dais and Tagis, among others, will be present in the different gardens.
The event is co-organised by Lisbon City Council and last year's edition had more than 28,000 participants.
