“A total of 842 arrests were also made for road crimes, namely 474 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 368 for driving without a legal license, which represents an increase of around 45%, compared to the arrest records for the same period in 2024”, said the Public Security Police (PSP).

The PSP recorded 4,417 accidents in April, which resulted in three deaths, caused by two crashes in Lisbon and an accident in Guarda.

In the accidents, 1,388 people were injured, with 58 suffering serious injuries and 1,330 minor injuries, according to the statement.

In April last year, more accidents occurred, with a total of 4,681 accidents, according to the PSP.

“The traffic accident data, although provisional, for April 2025, compared to the same period in 2024, reveal a decrease in the number of accidents (-264), minor injuries (-85), total injuries (-84) and fatalities (-2),” the statement said.

The PSP recorded 20,279 traffic violations in April, that is, on average, there were 676 violations per day and “4,404 violations were for speeding, which corresponds to 22% of the total violations recorded”, according to the note.

In April 2025, the PSP recorded 1,688 more speeding drivers than in the same period last year (2,716), which corresponds to an increase of around 62%.

Police found that 341 violations were committed for drunk driving and 571 for drivers using cell phones.

The PSP indicated that there was an increase in the number of infractions due to improper use of cell phones, compared to April last year, when 490 infractions were recorded.

In April 2025, 2,048 infractions were identified for lack of mandatory periodic inspection, 757 for lack of civil liability insurance, which covers damages that may be caused to third parties while driving, 79 infractions more than last year (678).

There were also 236 infractions recorded for not wearing a seat belt, 65 fewer than last year (301).

The PSP also identified 120 infractions due to the absence of restraint systems, a safety device for accidents and sudden braking, which must be placed on baby and child seats, 66 fewer than last year (186).

For the police, “the human factor is recognized as the most relevant condition for the occurrence of most traffic accidents, whether due to violation and/or disrespect for traffic rules and signs”.

The PSP highlighted that responsible and compliant behaviour by drivers is essential to reducing road accidents.

Police have appealed to drivers not to drive drunk or speed.

The PSP also asked people not to use their cell phones while driving and to wear a seatbelt.

For motorcycle drivers, the PSP also advised overtaking only after being sure that they have been seen by the other driver.
