The replacement works, which began approximately a year ago, were completed at the end of April, and the new pipeline is now operational and serving the residents of Lagoa. This was a complex, demanding, and time-consuming intervention due to the technical challenges involved. Nevertheless, it was very significant for a borough that aspires to maintain high standards and become increasingly sustainable.

The Municipality of Lagoa invested over €1.2 million in replacing this main pipeline, aiming to improve public service by reducing supply failures, decreasing both real and apparent water losses, lowering the volume of imported water into the system, and enhancing performance across all system assessment indicators. In addition to replacing the main, the Municipality also extended the water distribution network in the area by installing a distribution pipeline and corresponding branches – an additional investment of €150,000.

Next, resurfacing works will be carried out on the road between the junction with Rua das Alagoas Brancas and the junction with EM1273, near Salicos.

The intervention forms part of the first phase of the borough’s water main system redesign and optimisation plan, as outlined in Lagoa’s Infrastructure Asset Management Tactical Plan. The municipality is also nearing completion of the Lagoa - Estômbar - Calvário and Cerca da Lapa - Sesmarias water main replacements, along with the implementation of District Metered Areas (DMAs) across the borough.

Lagoa’s total investment in water efficiency surpasses €5 million, positioning the borough for a more sustainable future and enhancing resilience to climate change through efficient management of environmental resources, particularly water and energy.

“We’ve taken an important step towards resolving some of the borough’s water supply issues and addressing real water losses. It was a delicate intervention – the kind no one enjoys undertaking – but it was essential for the borough’s future,” stated Luís Encarnação, Mayor of Lagoa.
