The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) stated that
between 19 December and 2 January, there were more accidents compared to the
same period last year.
According to ANSR, the increase in the number of accidents
at Christmas and New Year resulted in a growth, compared to the same period of
the previous year, in the number of fatal victims of 22.3% and in the number of
accidents of 16.1%.
The 22 fatalities were caused by 21 accidents that occurred
in the districts of Porto (5), Lisbon (4), Faro (3), Aveiro (2), Setúbal (2), Beja
(1), Coimbra (1), Leiria (1) and Santarém (1), as well as in the Autonomous
Regions of the Azores and Madeira, with one fatality each.
During the campaign, the authorities inspected 5.6 million
vehicles and registered 51.4 thousand infractions.
According to ANSR, 23,100 records were registered in
vehicles that circulated in excess of speed and 1,625 drivers had a blood
alcohol level higher than the maximum allowed, which resulted in a total of 811
arrests, 124 more than in the previous year.
I for one would be interested to learn, from these figures, if there is also a detailed breakdown of the non Portuguese nationals that were found to be over the legal drink drive limit or if they were involved in any accidents? Thanks and Happy New Year.

I'm with Ian; can you break it down for us please. Besides the smoking at indoor establishments the second biggest complaint I hear from people who have visited Portugal is that the Portuguese drive like maniacs so be careful. It actually stands to reason with so many roundabouts but the complaint is about speed. Please prove them wrong.
