“One of the secrets is that the parade is open to everyone – families, children, the entire community participates,” he said during the allegorical parade that enlivened Funchal’s seafront.

This year’s festivities have once again drawn large crowds, with over 1,700 performers from 13 groups parading along the Avenida do Mar. More than 8,000 seats were installed for spectators, and the festival is estimated to involve over 4,000 participants in its preparation and execution. The 2025 theme, Sonho de Flores (Dream of Flowers), was brought to life by dazzling floats and vibrant costumes, including highlights like “Madeira dos Meus Encantos” by João Egídio and “Flores de Sonho” by the Escola de Samba Caneca Furada.

Since its inception in 1979, the Flower Festival has grown into a flagship cultural event, organised by Madeira’s Department of Tourism, Environment, and Culture. This year’s celebration represents an investment of approximately €911,000 by the regional government.

The festivities continue through 25 May, offering a packed schedule including a flower market with 25 stalls on Avenida Arriaga, the 70th Flower Exhibition, floral carpets, traditional embroidery exhibitions, folk performances, dance shows, and 85 concerts across multiple stages.

Hotel occupancy during the festival is running high at 95%, reflecting its popularity with locals and tourists alike.

The festival continues to unite culture, community, and tourism in a colourful celebration of Madeiran Identity.
