The Porto municipal tourist tax came into effect on 1 March 2018, at a value of two euros per night, having totaled 10.4 million euros at the end of that same year. However, with the update of the rate, which went from two to three euros from December 1, 2024, it is estimated that revenues could reach 30 million euros in 2025 if the number of overnight stays remains stable.
According to the city of Porto, the resources obtained have been fundamental to reinforce areas such as public safety, urban cleaning, conservation of public spaces and improvement of signage. Furthermore, the municipality has invested in the cultural, leisure and housing sectors.
The explanatory note for the tourist tax regulation states the “obligation to continue to ensure Porto as a sustainable reference destination, preventing degradation and excessive occupation”.
The Municipal Tourist Tax (TMT) translates into a contribution from users of Tourist Enterprises and Local Accommodation in the City towards the sustainability of Porto as a tourist destination, allowing the municipality to better respond to the wear and tear inherent to the tourist footprint in the city”, explains the Porto City Council on its official website.
