Data from Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes (IMT) from Tráfego Médio Diário Annual (TMDA) on sections of Via de Cintura Interna (VCI) in Porto, the most congested section was Freixo Norte – Francos, with 136.1 thousand vehicles, followed by Francos – Arrábida Norte, with 122.7 thousand vehicles. When including sections in Vila Nova de Gaia, the TMDA in total of VCI is 113.3 million, 1.3% higher compared to 2023. The municipality has seen an increase ranging from 1.1% to 1.9% in sections of their highway.
IMT also stated that there has been an increase in vehicles circulating in adjacent roads to VCI. For example, Avenida AEP (A28) saw a 0.3% increase, whilst the A3 highway with access between VCI and Águas Santas saw a 3.0% growth in TMDA. Porto Outer Region Circular (CREP/A41) registered an increase between 8.8% to 9.1% in segments in the north and south of Douro River.
The annual averages for individual sections are calculated using the monthly daily averages for each month, considering the length of each section, to obtain accurate results.
The government proposed a solution to mitigate traffic on the VCI in Porto with the placing of six gantries at its entries to inhibit the circulation of heavy vehicles, but so far, the ministry has said no proposals have been confirmed.
