Switzerland, a landlocked country, has risen to become the largest container ship nation in the world, mostly attributed to the Mediterranean Shipping Company, based in Geneva.

This was mostly attributed to the Mediterranean Shipping Company based in Geneva, which not only made a name for itself by acquiring a stake in the HHLA, but most recently also as a buyer of German container ships.
The global fleet leader, Germany, has fallen to third place, with China now ranking second at 31 million gross tons, as Switzerland leads with 34.7 million.
